Today, in the second game of a four-game series, the Colorado Rockies (15-57) will face the Washington Nationals (30-42).
The Rockies’ 57 losses in the first 72 games of a season are tied with the 1932 Boston Red Sox for the most in the Modern Era (since 1901). Incidentally, the Red Sox lost their 73rd game of the season to drop to 15-58.
Last night, the Rockies got the series off on a positive note by winning the opener. The Rockies scored three runs in the ninth inning for a 6-4 comeback win, their second win of the season when entering the ninth inning trailing their opponent (2-51). For those keeping track at home, 10 of the Rockies 15 wins this season have been come-from-behind victories.
Tonight, they will look to extend their series lead, with a split being the absolute worst outcome though it’s worth pointing out that the Nationals have won three consecutive home series against the Rockies since the 2022 season.
It has been a difficult stretch for the Nationals, who have now lost nine consecutive games and are dealing with a bit of clubhouse drama.
RHP Antonio Senzatela will take the mound for the Rockies. In 66.0 IP, he’s eaerned a 7.23 ERA with 35 strikeouts and 24 walks.
Leading off for Washington will be Michael Soroka. He currently has a 5.14 ERA in 42.0 IP. That includes 40 Ks and 10 walks. Soroka faces the Rockies for just the second time in his career. He worked 4.0 innings out of the bullpen against Colorado on June 30 last season. In that outing, he allowed two unearned runs on one hit and struck out six.
