At the very least, the Louisville baseball team will be one of last four standing in 2025.

Dan McDonnell’s team staved off elimination for the third time in its last four games and exacted some revenge in the process with a dramatic 7-6 elimination game win over Oregon State Tuesday afternoon in Omaha. The Beavers broke U of L’s heart with a 4-3 walk-off win on Friday night.

The Cardinals, who never trailed in the game, opened the scoring in the bottom of the 1st when a two-out single by Eddie King Jr. brought in Alex Alicea from the third. Alicea led off the game with an infield single.

Jake Munroe added to the lead with a mammoth two-hun home run in the bottom of the 3rd inning. Zion Rose added a solo shot an inning later.

Louisville added a run on a Kamau Neighbors RBI single in the 6th inning, and an Eddie King Jr. sacrifice fly in the 7th.

The first real adversity of the afternoon for the Cardinals came in the top of the 9th. And in came in waves.

Carrying a 6-3 lead into the final frame, U of L left-handed reliever Wyatt Danilowicz saw his first pitch hammered over the left field fence by Oregon State’s Aiva Arquette. After a single from Gavin Turley and two balls to Wilson Weber, Danilowicz was lifted for right-hander Tucker Biven, who pitched just two days ago in Louisville’s win over Arizona.

Biven threw two balls to walk Weber and then allowed a single to AJ Singer to give OSU the bases loaded and nobody out. The all is lost moment seemingly came next, when Alex Alicea allowed a routine ground ball to underneath his glove, allowing two runs to score and giving the Beavers 2nd and 3rd with nobody out.

With Oregon State now needing the bare minimum of positive offense to take their first lead of the game, Biven clutched up. He struck out Jacob Krieg looking, Carson McEntire swinging, and then got Canon Reeder to pop out to 1st to end the inning and keep the game tied at 6.

Alicea earned a measure of redemption by drawing a hard-earned walk to start the bottom of the 9th. After two failed bunt attempts and three foul balls, Lucas Moore then earned his way on base by virtue of a catchers interference call. Matt Klein laid down a perfect bunt that was misfielded by Beaver pitcher Kellan Oakes, and suddenly it was Louisville which had the bases loaded and nobody out.

After a strikeout by Munroe, it was time for — who else — Eddie King Jr. to once again play postseason hero.

From ecstasy to agony to back to being on top of the world all in a single frame. What a ride.

With the win over Oregon State, Louisville matches its best performance ever at the College World Series. A victory over Coastal Carolina on Wednesday would set a new standard.

If U of L wins on Wednesday it would set up a second game with Coastal on Thursday for a spot in the CWS Championship Series. If the Chanticleers win, they move on and Louisville’s season comes to a close.

First pitch between the Cards and Chants on Wednesday is set for 2 p.m.
