2025 MLB Draft Preview: Cam Leiter scouting report

The 2025 MLB Draft is less than a month away — the first round kicks off on July 13, 2025 — so its time to start offering capsule looks at players the Texas Rangers could select with their top picks. The Rangers’ first round pick is at #12, their second round pick is at #52, and their third round pick is at #84.

Leading up to draft day, we will be doing writeups of some of the players who could end up getting selected by the Rangers with one of their first three picks. Today we are looking at Florida State University righthanded pitcher Cam Leiter.

Cam Leiter is a 6’5”, 234 lb. righthanded pitcher at Florida State University. He was undrafted out of Central Regional High School in Bayville, New Jersey, and pitched for Central Florida as a freshman. He then transferred to Florida State, where he was limited to seven starts due to shoulder issues in 2024, and has not pitched in 2025. Leiter is the son of former minor league pitcher Kurt Leiter, the nephew of Al Leiter and the cousin of Ranger pitcher Jack Leiter. Leiter turns 22 in December.

Leiter throws hard, with a fastball that, per BA, can reach 99 mph as well as a quality slider. He also has a curveball and a changeup that show promise, but which still need work. He has struggled with his command, but when he is on, he has big time upside as a starting pitcher. Between Leiter’s shoulder issues and his command issues, there is reliever risk, but he has the body and the stuff to be an impact starting pitcher if he can put it all together.

Leiter put up a 4.92 ERA in 56.2 innings over 15 appearances as a freshman, with 41 walks against 80 Ks. He had control issues in a brief Cape Cod League stint in the summer of 2023, as he walked 11 batters in 6.2 innings while allowing 10 runs. In his seven starts for Florida State in 2024, he walked 22 and struck out 56 in 35 innings over seven starts. MLB Pipeline says that Leiter could end up pitching in the Cape Cod League this summer, but its still up in the air as to whether he will be healthy enough to do so.

Baseball America has Leiter at #83 on their top 500 list. MLB Pipeline’s draft rankings have Leiter at #102. Keith Law’s top 100 list does not include Leiter. Kiley McDaniel’s top 150 list has Leiter at #102. Fangraphs has Leiter as one of the FV 40 guys on their board.

Leiter is an enigma, someone who could go in the early rounds in the draft or not get drafted at all. He still has two years of eligibility remaining, since he would qualify for a medical redshirt for 2025, and thus would have more bargaining power than your usual college draftee.

If someone wanted to bet on his upside, pedigree and health, he could provide a huge payoff as a 3rd-5th round pick, though you may have to go overslot to sign him. The Rangers, of course, have a Leiter in their organization already, and have shown a willingness to bet on upside with health concerns, as we have seen with the Kumar Rocker selection.
