DUBOIS — The DuBois Senior League All-Star baseball team had a trio of pitchers combine on a “perfect, perfect game” Thursday night against Bradford/Smethport/Mt. Jewett (BSMJ) as it opened the best-of-3 District 10 championship series with a lopsided 15-0, 4-inning victory at Showers Field.
DuBois’ Wes Clyde, Bryson Kail and Hunter Ho combined to throw that perfect game, striking out all 12 batters they saw in the process.
Clyde tossed the first two innings to get the win, recording six strikeouts. Kail and Ho followed with an inning each, as both struck out the side in order. Kail went to 3-0 on the final two hitters of the third but battled back to strike out both to keep the perfect game intact.
The trio was backed by an offense that only had four hits but took advantage of eight walks and eight errors while DuBois ran wild on the bases. It became apparent at one point that BSMJ wasn’t even going to try to throw out any of those base runners, with DuBois racking up 14 steals at that point.
Clyde helped her own cause as he went 2-for-2 with two RBIs and a pair of runs scored to lead the DuBois attack. Seth Wilmoth added a two-run single and finished with three RBIs, while Jack Statler had two RBIs without the aid of a hit.
With the win, DuBois is now one victory away from winning the District 10 title and securing a trip to the Pennsylvania State Tournament in DuBois in early July. The D-10 champ will now serve as a host team for the tournament.
That was the original set up before it was thought all eight sections in the state would be represented. However, one of the sections has now had its lone team pull out of the tourney, which opened the door for a host team to compete.
DuBois waisted little time seizing control of the game after Clyde enjoyed a quick 1-2-3 top of the first but scoring seven runs on two hits and five errors in the bottom half of the inning.
Clyde led off the inning with a single and promptly stole second and took third on an errant throw into the outfield. He then scored when Statler reached on an error. Statler then stole second and scored when Kail reached on an error.
The carousel on the bases continued as Kail quickly stole second and went to third on another bad throw down. He scored when Evan Burton reached on another error.
DuBois proceeded to load the bases with no outs before BSMJ starter Cameron Jacoby got a fly out to shallow left for the first out. A fly ball to center hit by Seth Wilmoth then scored Burton to make it 4-0.
Brody Knouse, who was hit by a pitch, then sprinted home from third on a wild pitch before London Duncan drew a walk. Clyde capped the inning with his second single of the frame which score both Isaac Dennison (walk) and Duncan to put DuBois up 7-0.
DuBois doubled that lead and then some in the second with eight more runs to push the lead out to 15-0.
Kail jump-started the inning with a leadoff single, then stole second and third before scoring on a balk call with one out. DuBois promptly loaded the bases as Knouse walked, Dennison reached on an error and Nate Witherite walked around a pitching change.
Wilmoth followed with a two-run single to center, with Witherite scoring a third run on the play to make it 11-0 when the ball went between the outfielder’s legs. Wilmoth wound up at third and scored shortly thereafter on a wild pitch.
Duncan and Clyde kept the rally going before both scored, with Clyde coming home when Statler reached on yet another error. Statler scored DuBois’ 15th and final run on a Kail groundout.
Those 15 runs proved to be enough to end the game early after the top of the fourth thanks to the dominant pitching by Clyde, Kail and Ho.
Bradford/Smethport/Mt. Jewett reliever Cole Funk managed to keep DuBois off the scoreboard in the bottom of the third with a 1-2-3 inning.
Game 2 will be played in Smethport on Saturday at 4 p.m.
