Manny Machado hit a leadoff ninth inning opposite field home run to pull the San Diego Padres within a run of the Kansas City Royals, but the visiting team was able to hold on for a 6-5 win at Petco Park, Friday.
The Padres’ bullpen kept the Royals off the board for 2 1/3 innings in relief of starter Nick Pivetta. Jason Adam started the top of the eighth and allowed a single and a walk to put runners at first and second with no outs. Salvador Perez hit a line drive over Machado into left field, which allowed a run to score to give Kansas City a 5-4 lead.
Adam recorded back-to-back strikeouts after the Perez single, but then allowed an RBI-single to Drew Waters to put the Royals up, 6-4. Adam ended the inning with his third strikeout of night, but he was unable to keep the game tied, 4-4.
The Padres had just pulled even in the bottom of the seventh inning after Gavin Sheets extended his hitting streak to 11 games with a two-run single that tied the game.
The line drive by Sheets came with two outs in the inning. He followed Machado, who hit a ground-rule double down the left field line. Luis Arraez would have scored on the hit, but instead was stopped at third. At the time, it appeared to be a critical play as it kept the Royals in front, 4-2. But Sheets made it a moot point with his clutch hit.
San Diego fought its way back into the game after trailing 4-0 after the top of the fifth. Padres starter Nick Pivetta was hurt by two home runs and two walks, and was knocked out of the game after 4 2/3 innings.
Pivetta allowed a solo home run to Bobby Witt Jr. in the second inning to put Kansas City up, 1-0. Pivetta navigated his way through the third and fourth innings without allowing a run. He started the fifth allowing back-to-back walks. A sacrifice bunt put runners at second and third with one out, but the runners were able to jog home thanks to a Jonathan India three-run home run to left-center to put the Royals up, 4-0.
Pivetta allowed four runs on six hits with two walks and three strikeouts before leaving the game. On the offensive side, Xander Bogaerts stayed hot, recording three more hits in four plate appearances with a walk and a run scored.
San Diego will face Kansas City, Saturday at 4:15 p.m.
