DENVER — Brandon Pfaadt is through four scoreless innings and Randal Grichuk has two RBIs, and the Diamondbacks lead the Colorado Rockies, 2-0, as play entered the bottom of the fifth inning on June 22, at Coors Field.

The Diamondbacks have a bare-bones lineup – Ketel Marte, Corbin Carroll and Lourdes Gurriel Jr. are all sitting – as they look to complete a three-game sweep of the Rockies.

They manufactured a pair of runs off Rockies right-hander Antonio Senzatela. In the second, Josh Naylor walked, moved to third on Eugenio Suarez’s double, then scored on Grichuk’s sacrifice fly.

In the fourth, Naylor dumped a single into center and took second on a wild pitch. Grichuk followed by a shooting a single into right field to make it 2-0.

Pfaadt has racked up six strikeouts through four innings, allowing just two hits and walking none.

The Rockies have put a couple of runners in scoring position but are 0 for 4 against Pfaadt in those situations.

Corbin Carroll to undergo MRI on hand

Arizona Diamondbacks right fielder Corbin Carroll will undergo an MRI on his left hand in Chicago on June 23, manager Torey Lovullo said.

Carroll has not played since being hit by a pitch in Toronto last week.

Lovullo admitted to some concern that Carroll’s hand hasn’t improved as quickly as hoped, but he also suggested the decision to send him for an MRI, which was made on June 21, was influenced by catcher Gabriel Moreno’s recent experience.

Moreno was struck on the hand by a pitch in the dirt and played through a hairline fracture that was not immediately detected by either an X-ray or an MRI.

With Carroll, Lovullo said the thinking was “just to make double sure before we ramp this thing up.”

With Moreno, there was little improvement over multiple weeks, Lovullo said. Lovullo said Carroll has progressed in how he feels but acknowledged, “It’s not progressing as quickly as we wanted it to.”

Carroll was not in the lineup for the Diamondbacks’ series finale with the Rockies on June 22. Neither was second baseman Ketel Marte or left fielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr., both of whom were scheduled to be off given the extreme caution the Diamondbacks tend to show when playing games at altitude in Denver.

Lovullo admitted to being tempted to put Marte in the lineup anyway, but decided against it. Marte himself was advocating for taking the day off when speaking with reporters the night before.

“The health of Ketel Marte for the remainder of the season is the most important thing,” Lovullo said.
