Possible Prison Sentence For Ex-MLB Star Wander Franco Revealed originally appeared on The Spun.

It’s been just about two years since former Rays top prospect Wander Franco played in an MLB game.

After making his professional debut with Tampa Bay at just 20 years old, Franco looked to be one of the most promising young talents in baseball. However, disturbing allegations involving a relationship with a minor completely upended his career and currently have him on the league’s restricted list as he awaits sentencing.

According to ESPN, prosecutors in Franco’s native Dominican Republic are seeking a five-year prison sentence for charges involving “sexual abuse, commercial sexual exploitation and human trafficking of a minor.”

But the infielder’s legal team is reportedly pushing to have the trial dismissed entirely due to “lack of evidence.”

Whether or not that actually happens remains to be seen. Although even if that were the case, Wander could still potentially have issues returning to Major League Baseball.

Rob Manfred and Co. will not rule on Franco’s status until his legal proceedings are over in the DR and the league conducts it’s own investigation into the 24-year-old’s alleged actions.

Franco’s lawyer has maintained his client’s innocence when it comes to these claims — which include allegedly transferring 1 million pesos to the mother of the young girl for her consent in the abuse.

The Rays phenom signed a record-setting 11-year, $182 million contract with the team back in 2021; which TB could have legal precedent to recoup if Franco sees the inside of a prison cell.
