I feel a little melancholic today.
Chase Burns makes his MLB debut tonight, less than a year after being taken second overall out of Wake Forest in the 2024 MLB Draft. He is one of the best pitching prospects in baseball, with favorable comps to Paul Skenes and a 100-mph fastball, paired with a 70-grade slider. He should be a blast to watch for years to come.
And I hope the Yankees absolutely spank him.
Sorry Chase, I wish you nothing but health, success and lots and lots of money over the course of a long MLB career. In my ideal world, you look back and laugh at how dreadful your first career start was, with four home runs allowed and Aaron Judge hitting a baseball so hard it lands in Kentucky. Such is the dilemma of partisanship.
Carlos Rodón, also not a terrible comp for Burns (albeit a left-handed one), gets the ball for the Yankees. He’s seen a little bit of regression over his last three outings, now sporting an ERA of 3.10 after allowing 11 runs in his last 16 innings. We still get a boatload of strikeouts from ‘Los, and the Reds do boast the seventh-highest strikeout rate in baseball, so we could see some electricity from both starters tonight.
Giancarlo Stanton and Jasson DomÃnguez get the short straws on offense, with Ben Rice at DH and Cody Bellinger, Trent Grisham, and Judge left to right in the outfield. I’ve been loving Cody’s energy and approach the last couple weeks, and really warming up to him hitting behind Judge the rest of the year. Oswald Peraza also tags in for DJ LeMahieu at the keystone.
