KNOX — Working its way back through the losers’ bracket, the New Bethlehem Major (under-10) Softball All-Star team landed a berth in the District 25 Championship game.

Tuesday’s 9-6 win at Knox earned the finals berth in the four-team double-elimination bracket that started last week. It started with a 9-0 loss at Clarion last Friday before two straight wins in elimination games got them back to Wednesday’s scheduled game at unbeaten Clarion.

If New Bethlehem beat Clarion Wednesday, an “if necessary” game was scheduled to be played Thursday at a site to be determined.

Tuesday, New Bethlehem used a massive eight-run inning in the bottom of the fifth inning to turn a 3-1 deficit into a 9-3 lead. Twelve batters reached the plate with the first five reaching to start the inning.

Skyler Yeany singled and moved to third before scoring on Claudia Snyder’s infield single. Brielle Smith walked and Mya Monrean’s infield single scored Snyder. After a walk to CeCe Magagnotti and a strikeout for the first out, Smith scored on a wild pitch before Maleah Neiswonger walked. Halle Hammond singled in Monrean.

Broghen Stewart reached on an error with Neiswonger scoring before Lexi Wile grounded out to push home Stewart to make it 9-3.

Knox scored three runs in its last at-bat in the top of the sixth before pitcher Charlie Westover shut things down and got a strikeout before a Knox baserunner tried to score on a wild pitch, but was tagged out to end the game.

Westover got the win in the circle again for New Bethlehem, striking out 14 with three walks and eight hits allowed.

Seven different players had hits for Newbie with Hammon going 2-for-3 with two runs scored.
