After getting Thursday off, the Yankees are set to return to action tonight, returning to the Bronx for a series against the Athletics.
The team formerly based — and to editorialize, still should be in my opinion — in Oakland will be coming into town for three games starting tonight. These two teams met previously in May in the A’s temporary home in Sacramento. The Yankees took two out of three, and since then, the A’s have slumped pretty hard with a 13-34 record. However, we’ve seen the Yankees struggle themselves of late, so they can’t afford to sleepwalk through another series.
For tonight’s series opener, Will Warren will take the mound. Warren has been on a pretty solid run of late, and he also went a season-long 7.1 innings — allowing just one run — when these two teams met in Sacramento.
The big news out of the rest of the lineup is that Ben Rice is getting another start behind the plate in an otherwise fairly normal starting nine. It will be just his second start there of the season; Austin Wells will be the sole backup tonight, as J.C. Escarra is away from the team on paternity leave.
Aaron Boone expects J.C. Escarra back from the paternity list Sunday.
The #Yankees won’t make a corresponding/official move. Braden Shewmake & Everson Pereira were in consideration, but the former got hurt and the latter also went on the paternity list.

The Athletics are giving the start to former Yankee prospect Mitch Spence, who was pried away during the Rule 5 Draft a couple years ago. He has pretty good numbers for the season as a whole, but he has only recently become a member of the A’s rotation, having started the year in the bullpen.
As the Yankees look to pick up a win in tonight’s series opener, we hope you’ll come join us for all the action.
