Braves shut out by Phillies following lengthy rain delay

  • June 28, 2025

ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) – The Atlanta Braves put up one of their worst performances of the season in Friday’s series opener against the Philadelphia Phillies, forcing fans to sit through nearly three hours of underwhelming baseball even after a lengthy rain delay.

But it didn’t matter. Most of the fans were gone by the fourth inning as the Braves fell to the Phillies, 13-0, after a long, warm, hot and humid summer night at Truist Park.

Friday’s game was the seventh regular season game broadcast live on Gray Media in 2025.

The game was pushed back two hours and 19 minutes past its 7:15 p.m. scheduled start time due to inclement weather, forcing a 9:35 p.m. first pitch. Braves starter Bryce Elder struggled in two innings of work, allowing nine earned runs on eight hits and four walks on 66 pitches.

Right-hander Mick Abel was supposed to start Friday’s game for Philadelphia, but the team ultimately decided to go with southpaw Tanner Banks following the lengthy delay. He pitched two scoreless innings and struck out one hitter.

Down 11 in the fourth inning, the Braves opted to sub-out Ronald Acuña Jr. – who started the game in right field – for Stuart Fairchild in order to give Acuña the opportunity to rest. The Braves were unable to score any runs without the offensive juggernaut in Acuña.

Following Sunday’s series finale against the Phillies, the Braves will host the Los Angeles Angels for a three-game series starting Tuesday.
