ALEXANDRIA

— Not much separated the Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton Post 387 legion baseball team and the Alexandria Zimny Insurance Post 87 baseball team in a doubleheader on Monday at Knute Nelson Memorial Park in Alexandria.

But in the end, a pair of big innings made the difference on June 30, 2025. DGF pushed across six runs in the top of the fifth inning and held off an Alexandria rally to win game one, 7-6, then won game two, 5-2, in extra innings, with a trio of runs in the top of the ninth inning.

“I think it’s a classic example of both teams taking advantage of mistakes by the other team and scoring runs,” Alexandria head coach Jake Munsch said. “DGF is a good program. They’ve always had a good baseball program. I thought our pitching was outstanding; we just didn’t have a timely hit on offense. We had spurts, just not enough.”

Post 87 jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning of game one with a Brody Adelman RBI groundout. Post 87 pushed its lead to 4-0 in the third inning with an Adelman RBI groundout and a Nolan Johnson 2-RBI single.

A Zander Deutsch RBI single in the top of the fourth inning started a stretch in which DGF scored seven runs unanswered to get its win.

In the top of the fifth inning, a Cayson Bergee RBI single, a West Hoover 2-RBI single, and a Tanner Cadwell RBI single gave DGF a 5-4 lead. A run on a passed ball and another on a fielder’s choice gave DGF a 7-4 lead after five innings.

Post 87 tried to rally in game one as a run on a Griffin Wimmer groundout, and a Sam Anderson RBI single cut Post 87’s deficit to one, 7-6, in the bottom of the seventh inning, but DGF Post 387 held on to win game one, 7-6.

“We’re a good team, sometimes the ball just doesn’t bounce your way,” Munsch said. “it’s all about having the mentality that you have an opportunity to play again tomorrow, which is the best part about baseball. You have to trust your ability to play the next day. We’ve played a lot of good baseball this summer.”

Post 87 led early in game two with an Adelman RBI single in the bottom of the first inning, but a Deutsch sacrifice fly tied the game at 1-1 in the fourth inning.

Post 87 retook the lead, 2-1, with an Adelman RBI lineout in the bottom of the fifth inning, but DGF tied the game once again with a Camden Schreiber RBI single in the top of the sixth inning.

A 2-out Cadwell RBI single, followed by a Dylan Anderson RBI single and a run on an error, gave DGF a 5-2 lead in the top of the ninth inning to win game two 5-2.

Alexandria has had a strong summer thus far thanks to pitching and defense.

“Our pitching and defense have been outstanding,” Munsch said. “We just need to have more timely hits on offense. They will come. Once one happens, it can be contagious. It all boils down to confidence, and the kids believe in themselves. I believe in them and think we’re going to be just fine.”
