Ever since Rob Thomson took over as manager of the Philadelphia Phillies in June 2022, the club has seen some remarkable success. That stretch continued on Monday night, as the Phils blanked the San Diego Padres 4-0 in Bryce Harper’s return to the lineup.

The victory not only put Philly two games ahead of the New York Mets for the NL East division lead, it also marked a huge milestone in Thomson’s managerial career: his 300th regular season win.
Thomson now sits at 300-220 overall, with his .577 winning percentage being the best among all Phillies full-time managers. He recently passed Eddie Sawyer for 11th-most wins (296) in franchise history, but he still remains well behind Charlie Manuel (780) for the top spot.

Topper sparked a resurgence in 2022, when the 22-29 Phillies rattled off 13 wins in 15 games upon his promotion. Were it not for another unimpressive start under Joe Girardi, one of Philly’s all-time great managers wouldn’t have been one at all – Thomson had originally planned to retire from coaching at the season’s end.

Since then, the Phillies have made a World Series, won the division for the first time since 2011, and reinvigorated the local fanbase to the tune of one of baseball’s top attendance figures. And it’s all been done as Thomson navigates challenges with the team – something that has continued this year.
Harper has missed 27 games this season due to injury – the fourth straight campaign where he hasn’t been fully healthy. Aside from Kyle Schwarber, power numbers are down throughout the Philadelphia lineup. And the current bullpen, with its 4.54 ERA, is easily the least impressive in his tenure.
Yet even with all that, the club sits at 50-35 and is poised to add at the deadline for the fourth straight season. Not a bad feat for Topper at all.
