Phillies Predicted to Replace Alec Bohm With Young Star Josh Hammond originally appeared on Athlon Sports.

The Philadelphia Phillies are being predicted to land high school third baseman/right-handed pitcher Josh Hammond out of Wesleyan Christian Academy (High Point, North Carolina), slotting him in as a future replacement for Alec Bohm.

According to Kiley McDaniel of ESPN, he is a very high-upside corner infielder who resembles two different MLB third basemen.

“He looks like Josh Donaldson, and the two-way narrative is similar to Austin Riley’s profile in high school,” McDaniel said.

But the bigger story here is the value that the Phillies are getting at this position to bring a power bat to the organization.

“[Hammond] could go about 10 picks higher than this and has a clear selling point: 70-grade power projection, a clear infield fit, upper-90s heat on the mound, sterling summer performance,” McDaniel said.

That description emphasizes both his raw power and two-way potential, which fits the Phillies’ desired prospect given their history of drafting high-ceiling high school players. MLB.com has Hammond rated 26th overall, which is close enough to where the Phillies are picking at 24 to keep this mock draft realistic.

Bohm is under contract through 2028 and still figures into the short-to-mid-term future at third base if he is not traded at the upcoming deadline, which there have been heavy rumors about. He is hitting .279 with seven homers and 37 RBIs so far this season.

Drafting Hammond sets up a clear succession plan while also giving him time to develop in the first developing in the minors as a power-hitting infielder. That would allow the Phillies not to sacrifice performance at third base should they decide to keep Bohm around.
