PHILADELPHIA — Cristopher Sánchez led the charge for the Philadelphia Philies, tossing seven complete innings of one-run ball on five hits while striking out five Friars en route to a 5-1 Philadelphia win over the San Diego Padres and splitting the doubleheader on Wednesday.
The Padres’ offense, which tallied six runs in game one of the doubleheader, seemed like a completely different team when facing Sánchez, Orion Kerkering, and Matt Strahm. San Diego only mustered up the courage to tack on one run against Sánchez, an RBI single by Jackson Merrill in the fourth after a Fernando Tatis Jr. single and stolen base led off the inning.
For the Phillies, they began their scoring in the fourth as well after Max Kepler launched his 10th home run of the season, a go-ahead two-run shot, that gave them the lead they wouldn’t surrender for the remainder of the game.
Brandon Marash would follow that up in the following inning with a home run of his own, his third of the 2025 campaign, and the Phillies’ offense was alive and well as Nick Castellanos followed that with an RBI single that allowed Trea Turner to score easily. Alec Bohm put the finishing touches on this one after lining an RBI triple down the right field line and securing the 5-1 victory.
With this loss, San Diego (46-40) ultimately drops this series against Philadelphia, two games to three, and loses the only two series on this road trip. The Padres have an off day/travel day tomorrow before welcoming the Texas Rangers at home for a weekend series starting Friday afternoon.
