Let’s play a game. What are the five most recent ballparks the Yankees have played their first regular-season game in? Bonus question: What’s their record?
If you guessed 3-2, congrats! I’d be really impressed, though, if you guessed the five.
April 17, 2025: 6-3 win over Rays at George M. Steinbrenner Field (Tampa, FL)
August 12, 2021: 8-9 loss vs. White Sox at the Field of Dreams (Dyersville, IA)
May 18, 2021: 7-4 win over Rangers at Globe Life Field (Arlington, TX)
April 12, 2021: 3-1 win over Blue Jays at TD Ballpark (Dunedin, FL)
September 7, 2020: 7-12 loss vs TOR at Sahlen Field (Buffalo, NY)
Sutter Health Park in Sacramento will be the second new park of the season for the Yankees after they visited six new parks in a span of two years earlier in the decade. This is, incredibly, the fourth minor-league ballpark the Yankees will play a regular-season game in over the past five seasons.
It’s also important to note that these are just “The Athletics.” Not Oakland, not Las Vegas, not even Sacramento. Just “The Athletics.” Gross.
Will Warren will take the mound for the Yankees in a pretty unfavorable environment. After striking out a career-high eight batters in an up-and-down start against the Rays last week, he’ll look to keep a pretty good A’s offense at bay, as they enter play slashing .258/.319/.421 (110 wRC+) with the eighth-most home runs in baseball at 48.
Warren will alternate between stretches of dominance, where he makes hitters look silly, and extremely frustrating command lapses, whether in the zone or out. For him to succeed today, he’ll need to do more of the former. Nobody has been able to touch his fastball all year, but his secondaries are way too inconsistent to complement it.
The Yankees will face A’s starter Osvaldo Bido, who is off to an OK start, pitching to a 4.71 ERA (87 ERA+) through seven starts. There is reason to believe that he’s overperforming his numbers despite entering play with a 5.78 FIP, 9.7 H/9, and just 21 strikeouts in 36.1 innings. However, as we learned with Baltimore’s Tomoyuki Sugano last week, that might not matter.
Bido was incredible at preventing hard contact in 2024, but has been stung by it so far this year. He’s predominantly fastball-slider, but his changeup has worked as a good third pitch. Notably, against lefties, that changeup is more of a second pitch.
Trent Grisham will once again lead off for the Yankees after his pinch-hit game-tying home run in Wednesday’s win. Jasson Domínguez slides up to fifth and will play left field, as Cody Bellinger gets the day off. J.C. Escarra, the other hero on Wednesday, will bat seventh as Austin Wells will likely start tomorrow in the day game after a night game. With a righty on the mound, Jorbit Vivas and Oswaldo Cabrera will play second and third base, respectively.
It’s a typical lineup for the A’s, as star rookie Jacob Wilson will lead off and play shortstop, while former Yankee Miguel Andujar will bat sixth and play third (yikes). Another old friend, Gio Urshela, gets the day off as top prospect Nick Kurtz bats ninth.
