The Chicago Cubs released an infielder before the 2025 MLB season could get underway. He eventually made his way back to the team before being sent away once more.

Now, the New York Yankees, after losing four of their last five games, are picking up the former Cubs infielder. According to Robert Murray on Twitter/X, the Yankees are signing Nicky Lopez to a minor league deal.
The new Yankees infielder has bounced around the league since the start of the year. He played five games with the Los Angeles Angels, made his way back to the Cubs, and was then signed by the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Lopez never made the Diamondbacks’ Major League roster, and he was only in the organization from May 27th to June 1st. But, he’s back with a new team, his fourth this season since being released by the Cubs.

In his Major League stint with the Cubs in 2025, he played in 14 games. In his 18 at-bats, Lopez had one hit, two runs scored, one RBI, four walks, and three strikeouts.
He struggled offensively and couldn’t stick on the Major League roster. Now, while not on the Yankees’ Major League roster, he’ll get a chance to play in the Minor Leagues and try to make a comeback.
Lopez, in Triple-A this season, played in 24 games and has a .620 OPS. In his Minor League career, he has a .771 OPS and a .294 batting average. It’s yet to translate to the big leagues, but Lopez will look to do so with the Yankees.
