To start this holiday week, the Yankees were up in Toronto to take the Blue Jays, and that could’ve been better. A bunch of losses doomed them to a four-game sweep, as July hasn’t started much better than their June swoon. Now, it’s time to return to their home…city.

Starting this afternoon, the Yankees will be across town in Queens to kick of a three-game set against the Mets. Despite a good record for the season, the Mets have struggled themselves lately, including getting swept by the Pirates last weekend. Beyond that, the Yankees did take two out of three when these two teams met in May in the Bronx.

As the Subway Series gets back on the tracks this weekend, here’s a look at the expected pitching matchups for the next couple days. And, we’ll do it all without mentioning the name of a certain Mets’ outfielder. Just kidding: Juan Soto.

Friday: Marcus Stroman vs. TBD (3:10 pm ET)

Last Sunday against the Athletics, Stroman made his return from the injured list, and it went…not disastrously? He allowed just one run on three hits in five innings as the Yankees beat the A’s. Now, that lowered his ERA for the season to 8.16, and I’ll understand your pessimism if you think that won’t be replicated.

The Mets’ rotation is currently quite injured, leading to them not having locked in a starter for the two bookend games of this weekend’s series at time of writing. The plan for the series opener seems to be Justin Hagenman. The Mets gave Hagenman his MLB debut out of the bullpen earlier this year, and he did solid enough. However, the 28-year old is a bit of a minor league journeyman and his numbers in the minors this year aren’t great.

Saturday: Carlos Rodón vs. Frankie Montas (4:10 pm ET)

Earlier this week, Rodón got the start in the series opener against the Blue Jays. His two runs in five innings wasn’t the reason the Yankees lost that game, but with three walks it was a bit of a tedious outing from him. He had another tedious yet solid outing against the Mets earlier this season, again only lasting five innings, despite holding them to one run on two hits.

Former Yankee Montas will take the ball for the Mets in this one, and — if you’ve missed the news — he had a horrid time in the minor leagues while rehabbing. In four starts in Triple-A Syracuse, Montas has an ERA of 13.19, having allowed 21 runs in 14.1 innings. This would be the natural spot for the Yankee offense to either crush him or roll over, as they occasionally do against a former Yankee, no in between.

Sunday: Max Fried vs. TBD (1:40 pm ET)

Tuesday night in Toronto was arguably Fried’s worst start in his otherwise pretty sparkling season. Two homers, both in a back-breaking four run inning after he hadn’t allowed a run to that point, doomed Fried, as the Yankees lost that game. That being said, his ERA sits at just 2.13 after that game, which includes an eight strikeout game against this Mets team back in May.

Again, nothing officially confirmed by the Mets yet, but indications seem to be pointing to them going with Brandon Waddell. The 31-yeard old didn’t play in any of the 2022-2024 MLB season as he spent those years playing in Korea and Taiwan. His return to the majors this year has gone decently, as he has a 2.55 ERA in 17.2 innings, albeit all of the them out of the bullpen and with a FIP of 4.05
