TORONTO- Despite a late inning offensive surge, the Angels lost in extras to the Toronto Blue Jays 4-3 after an errant throw to first Friday, July 4 at Rogers Centre.Â
Blue Jays starting pitcher Eric Lauer largely contained the Angels throughout the game, holding the Halos hitless until Angels outfielder Jo Adell ripped a hard line drive into the left field corner and stretched that into a double.Â
Adell was called out initially, and suffered an injury to the nose on the tag by Blue Jays shortstop ?? struck him in the face with the tag. After review, it was found that Adell snuck his hand past the tag before his nose paid the price, and he was ruled safe after review.Â
The Blue Jays broke open the scoreboard in the bottom of the sixth inning. Toronto put together two runs on three hits to go ahead 2-0 before Blue Jays shortstop Bo Bichette struck a hard ground ball that skipped off the glove of Angels shortstop Zach Neto, allowing Blue Jays Leo Jiménez to score to improve the Blue Jays to 3-0.Â
Los Angeles didn’t take the scoring run lightly, and answered back with a three-run top of the seventh. Angels outfielders MIke Trout and Taylor Ward opened the inning with back-to-back singles before Adell tied the game with a three-run-blast to make it 3-3.Â
That score would be good enough to take the game into extra innings. With Sam Bachman on the mound for the Angels in the bottom of the tenth, Blue Jays left fielder Nathan Lukes walked to lead off the inning. That brought third baseman Ernie Clement up to bat, who squared away for what he planned on being a sacrifice bunt.
The bunt rolled to the right side of the mound and Bachman fielded, but his throw down to first base sailed above Schanuel’s glove and down the right field line, allowing Myles Straw, the Toronto designated runner, to score from second base and seal the game in walkoff fashion for the Blue Jays 4-3.Â
The loss puts the Angels back below .500. They look to get back to even in the next game of the series Saturday, July 5 at 12:07 pm PDT.Â
