The Tampa Bay Rays are in need of a spark plug to get their season going. Exciting rookie outfielder Chandler Simpson could be just what the doctor ordered.
The Rays called the rookie up to the Major League level on April 18. At the time, they were 8-12 and in last place in the American League East. Since Simpson’s arrival, they have gone 6-6, beginning the slow climb back to relevancy.
Simpson, 24, is most known for his speed. In just 110 minor league games, the youngster swiped a total of 104 bags. MLB has not seen speed like that since Billy Hamilton.

Since joining the Major League club, however, it has not been stolen bases that have helped Simpson be successful, but his offensive production at the plate. Through his first 12 games, Simpson is batting .292/.333/.313 with 14 hits in 12 games, three RBI, and three stolen bases.
The outfielder has only struck out seven times through his first 51 plate appearances, a fantastic 13.7% K-rate for a rookie. He excels at putting the ball in play, and when he does put the ball in play, he is able to make things happen with his speed.
Defensively, it has not gone as well for Simpson. He has only played center field to this point in his Major League career, and through 12 games, he has already accrued -2 Outs Above Average. His arm is weak for the position as well, with his max throw coming in at only 82.8 MPH to this point. While he does have the speed to patrol centerfield, his reads and arm indicate that he may be better suited for right field or even second base.
Despite the struggles on defense, it has been a strong first two weeks for the young speedster. The Rays were in need of a wake-up call, a spark plug, or any other cliche you can use for their situation, and Chandler Simpson could be just what the doctor ordered.
