Rob Vaughn has addressed the Tide’s needs this offseason, especially regarding the bullpen. Alabama added its sixth pitcher to the bullpen over the weekend, a right-hander from the ACC.

Over the weekend, Griffin Stieg, a 6-foot-3, 215-pound former Virginia Tech pitcher, announced his commitment to the Crimson Tide via Instagram.

Unfortunately, Stieg did not see any action last season due to undergoing UCL surgery at the end of the 2024 season, which sidelined him for the entire 2025 season. In his two seasons with the Hokies, the right-handed pitcher has recorded 72 strikeouts, allowing 28 walks, 80 hits, and 43 runs. He has maintained a career ERA of 5.25 in over 70.1 innings pitched and has a career record of four wins and two losses on the mound in his time with Virginia Tech.

In his freshman season, Stieg appeared in 16 games while starting only one. Throughout his 18.2 innings pitched, he had 24 strikeouts, a 1-0 record, and an ERA of 6.75 to conclude the 2023 season. Stieg came out in 2024 as a sophomore and was named one of the Hokies’ starting pitchers. The righty started 13 games that season, which saw him double his strikeout total from the previous year, finishing with 48 strikeouts and a 3-2 record while maintaining a 4.70 ERA.

With Stieg currently being eligible for the MLB draft, there is a chance that he could be drafted. Still, the likelihood of that happening is low, with Vaughn and the Tide’s pitching coach, Jason Jackson, looking to utilize the experienced pitcher. This is the second pitcher from a power four school that the Tide has landed in the portal this offseason, with former Texas Tech pitcher Tyler Boudreau committing to the Tide last week.

Vaughn and his staff have made significant changes to the roster, positioning the Tide for deep playoff runs. One area that has received particular attention is the bullpen, which was a notable weakness for Alabama last season. The coaching staff is focused on improving this aspect of the team, adding six pitchers from the transfer portal to strengthen the bullpen this offseason. Below is the complete list of pitchers that Alabama has acquired from the transfer portal this offseason.
