Cubs Predicted to Land Right-Hander Who Recently Threw No-Hitter originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
Players can certainly raise their draft stock during the College World Series. If there’s one player who did that during the 2025 College World Series, it was Arkansas right-hander Gage Wood. Wood threw a 19-strikeout no-hitter, the third in college World Series history.

Entering the College World Series, many viewed Wood as one of the top prospects in the draft.
After that, some believe he’s a definite first-round talent, and it’s undoubtedly tough to deny. The right-hander has some of the best stuff in the nation for this class and should be in a good spot to get paid handsomely with a high slot value pick.
When searching for the team that might be the one to select him, The Sporting Tribune recently named the Chicago Cubs as the squad.

“Looking at collegiates all around this range and into the 20’s. I’ve heard pitching here and Wood or Bremner would be the most sensible. If neither are available, they’d lean towards power in Aloy or LaViolette,” they wrote.

The Cubs have several options for how they could proceed in the draft. Drafting for need in the MLB draft is never a thing, so they likely take the best player on their board.
Some believe Wood could fall into the 20s range, which the Cubs wouldn’t be doing, considering they have the 17th pick. Still, if he’s there, there’s reason to believe it could be a good decision to draft him.
He has a big fastball, and if that continues to play at the highest level, they’ll be getting an outstanding player.
