Diamondbacks RHP Brandon Pfaadt (8-6, 5.42) vs. Padres RHP Dylan Cease (3-8, 4.62).
At Petco Park: Pfaadt, since May 20, has one win, three losses and four no-decisions. His last win was June 10 when he pitched five innings and allowed two runs on nine hits. With Pfaadt’s average of just over five innings per start, the Diamondbacks would like him to be able to go longer and help save the bullpen. He has made six career starts against the Padres but is facing them for the first time in 2025. Pfaadt’s record against San Diego is 1-2 with a 3.48 earned run average. He has never won a game at Petco Park in his three starts there. … Cease has been the subject of recent trade talk as the Padres could unload him for some help with their push for the postseason. There are reports that he isn’t likely to be re-signed by the Padres when he hits free agency after this season. In his past two starts, he’s pitched a combined 10 innings and allowed seven earned runs on 13 hits. Cease is 1-1 with a 2.49 ERA in three career starts against the Diamondbacks.
