A few years ago, Vidal Brujan was viewed as one of the better prospects in Major League Baseball with the Tampa Bay Rays.

Unfortunately, the youngster hasn’t figured things out at the highest level and is now doing so with the Chicago Cubs. Brujan is in an intriguing spot with the Cubs, as he doesn’t play much despite being on the roster.

When searching for players who could be gone by the deadline, Zachary Rotman recently named Brujan as a potential option. He added that while he has decent speed and could bring things to the Cubs’ bench, they may look to move on from him over the next few weeks.

“Small sample, sure, but Brujan has been on the active roster since mid-April when he was activated off the IL and has started a total of six games,” Rotman wrote. “Yes, he’s essentially started two games per month for half the season, which is absurd. For the most part, he’s either entered a game as a defensive replacement, a pinch-runner, or as a pinch-hitter in a blowout.

“Brujan can play a variety of positions, which is valuable, but what else does he offer? He has a .389 OPS this season and a .522 OPS in parts of five MLB seasons, so he can’t really hit. He’s known for having good speed, but he’s stolen only 16 bases in 30 attempts in his career, has gone 2-for-3 this season, and ranks in the 42nd percentile in sprint speed according to Baseball Savant.”

It seems unlikely that another team would want to take Brujan at this stage of his career, but it’s possible that he could be a throw-in for a smaller trade.

He has the tools to be a decent player, but a lot more goes into it, and most teams likely won’t want to deal with his offensive struggles.
