The questions remain will the Kansas City Chiefs and Kansas City Royals stay in Missouri or will they go now to Kansas.
On Monday, Kansas lawmakers voted to extend the state’s offer to provide up to 70-percent of the cost to build new stadiums, giving the Kansas City Chiefs and Royals more time to negotiate stadium deals.
This follows Missouri’s recent approval of a special session package, which offers to cover up to 50% of stadium construction costs.
Just days after Missouri’s approval, Chiefs President Mark Donovan sent a letter to the Kansas Legislature requesting additional time to consider their options.
Kansas City Democrat and House Minority Leader Ashley Aune says it was deeply frustrating to see the request from the Chiefs.
“And I know it’s really frustrating for voters who see legislators voting to sensibly give away taxpayer dollars to billionaires, which is not what it actually is for those who don’t understand, the stadiums are publicly owned. However, it’s a really frustrating process and it’s frustrating to see that they’re continuing to play a game when what we want to see is our team staying here in Missouri.”
The Kansas Legislature has extended its offer for another year.
