Liam Doyle spectacular start with Tennessee baseball has him generating major MLB Draft buzz.

The Vols ace is the No. 1 prospect for the 2025 MLB Draft according to The Athletic’s Keith Law, who released his rankings of the top 30 prospects for July’s draft Tuesday. Doyle is 2-0 with a 0.61 ERA with 34 strikeouts in 14â…” innings in his first three starts. The Ole Miss transfer has allowed one run on six hits and three walks.

Second baseman Gavin Kilen is ranked No. 6 and shortstop Dean Curley is No. 25 on Law’s list. Kilen is hitting .511 with seven homers among his 14 extra-base hits. The Louisville transfer has 19 RBIs and 24 runs. Curley is hitting .356 with five homers and 13 RBIs.

Two Tennessee commitments are ranked in the top 30. Billy Carlson, a shortstop from California, is No. 14. Steele Hall, a shortstop from Alabama, is No. 27 after reclassifying to the 2025 class. Two-way standout Kruz Schoolcraft and pitcher Cameron Appenzeller are also considered top MLB Draft prospects.

Luke Hochevar is the only No. 1 MLB Draft pick in Tennessee history. The pitcher was taken No. 1 by the Kansas City Royals in 2006 after playing independent league baseball for a season. He was picked No. 40 by the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2005 out of UT, but did not sign.

Christian Moore is the highest-drafted player under coach Tony Vitello. He was picked No. 8 by the Los Angeles Angels in the 2024 MLB Draft. Chase Dollander is the highest-drafted pitcher. He was taken No. 9 by the Colorado Rockies in the 2023 MLB Draft.

Moore and Dollander are two of five first-round picks in Vitello’s tenure. In the 2022 MLB Draft, outfielders Drew Gilbert and Jordan Beck were taken No. 28 by the Houston Astros and No. 38 by the Rockies, respectively. Garrett Crochet was picked No. 11 overall by the Chicago White Sox in 2020.

Tennessee has had 33 picks in the past four drafts, including a program-record 10 players picked in 2022.
