The Wilkes 10U baseball all-stars opened Tar Heel Leagues District 2 play Monday with a 12-7 win over Watauga at the River’s Edge sports complex in Wilkesboro.
The Wilkes all-stars, led by head coach Chris Russell, advanced to play Yancey County on Tuesday, with the district crown set to be won on Wednesday or today (Thursday), if necessary. Those results will be published in the July 17 edition of the Wilkes Journal-Patriot.
On Monday, Wilkes broke a 5-5 tie with seven runs in the top of the sixth. Bentley Hall led off with an infield single, took third as Easton Scercy reached on an error, scored the go-ahead run after Lucas Barker drew a bases-loaded walk.
Clayton Ward then delivered a two-run single, plating Owen Russell and Scercy, and Samuel Steelman walked with the sacks loaded, scoring Barker for a 9-5 lead.
Ward later scored on a wild pitch, then Colston Hall clutched a two-out, two-run single to right, plating Steelman and Jude Herndon to make it 12-5.
Watauga got two runs back in the bottom of the sixth, but Wilkes reliever Lucas Barker closed the door by handling a bases-loaded, game-ending groundout.
Russell, the second of three relievers who spelled starter Herndon, picked up the win. He struck out two batters, adding to the totals of Clayton Ward (five whiffs in two frames) and Herndon (six in two innings).
Ward drove in a team-high three runs, while Barker scored three times. Ward and Herndon paced the victors with a pair of hits.
