The Houston Astros are sitting atop the AL West and are in solid shape to make a run for a bye in the AL postseason field. But the team has dealt with some injuries lately. Fortunately, help is on the way.

According to Astros reporter for MLB.com Brian McTaggart, the Astros are calling up number one prospect Brice Matthews for their series against the Texas Rangers, right before the 2025 All-Star break.

Matthews, the Astros’ number one prospect and the 98th-ranked prospect according to MLB.com’s prospect rankings, is finally getting the call to the big leagues. He’s been in Triple-A all season long and has been playing great, and more than justified the call-up.

Through 73 games in Triple-A this season, Matthews had a .283 batting average, a .400 on-base percentage, and a .476 slugging percentage. His .876 OPS is the highest he’s had in a season for the Astros since being drafted in the first round of the 2023 MLB draft.

In his 269 at-bats in the minors, Matthews had 76 hits, 51 runs scored, 12 doubles, five triples, 10 home runs, 39 RBIs, 50 walks, and 98 strikeouts. He also stole 25 bases, getting caught six times in the process.

It’s a long-awaited debut looming for the Astros’ top prospect, and with the current state of the roster, his addition will be imperative. In the minors this season, Matthews has experience playing center field (one game), second base (58 games), and shortstop (six games).

When he makes his Astros debut for the weekend series against the division rival Rangers, Matthews will likely start at second base or shortstop. With all the injuries the Astros have suffered, he may even get some run in the outfield.

But, regardless of where he plays, being able to bring the top prospect up to the Majors is a very exciting time for the Astros. The 23-year-old will provide a nice spark in the lineup, as he’s set to make his MLB debut during the weekend series against the division rival Rangers.
