SAN DIEGO —Heading to the bottom of the sixth Thursday, July 10, at Petco Park, the Padres hold a 4-2 lead after coming back from a 2-0 deficit.
Manny Machado’s solo home run to left field in the bottom of the fifth inning gave the Padres the lead, and one batter later, Diamondbacks starter Eduardo Rodriguez was taken out of the game.
The Diamondbacks took the early lead on a pair of sacrifice flies from José Herrera and Corbin Carroll in the third inning. Ketel Marte singled and Geraldo Perdomo followed with a double off the wall in right field, but Marte held up at third instead of trying to score with two outs.
Marte was stranded after an intentional walk to Josh Naylor loaded the bases.
Fernando Tatis Jr. homered off Rodriguez to start the bottom of the third, making the score 2-1. Jackson Merrill scored from third base on a groundout in the fourth to tie the game.
Rodriguez ran into trouble again in the fifth, surrendering Machado’s home run and a Gavin Sheets single. That ended his night.
Xander Bogaerts greeted Arizona reliever Juan Morillo with a double down the left-field line to drive in Sheets, but Morillo was able to escape without further damage by inducing a double-play groundout and striking out Jake Cronenworth.
Managing Diamondbacks’ All-Stars’ playing time
The workload management of the Diamondbacks’ three All-Stars began on Thursday, July 10, with Corbin Carroll serving as the DH and leading off against the San Diego Padres.
Manager Torey Lovullo said he plans to give one or two of the All-Stars — Carroll, Ketel Marte and Eugenio Suarez — some time off in the form of a day out of the lineup or as the designated hitter over the next few days.
Suarez was at third base and Marte at second on July 10, so either player or both could be out of the lineup or used at DH over the next few days.
The Diamondbacks play their last three games before the All-Star break in Anaheim against the Los Angeles Angels. Then Carroll, Marte and Suarez head across the country to Atlanta while the rest of the players go their separate ways until July 17.
An optional team workout is planned for that day, but the All-Stars will be excused from that to get a little more personal time, Lovullo said. The Diamondbacks resume the regular season July 18 against the St. Louis Cardinals at Chase Field.
“That’s something that I’ve done with all the All-Stars over the years and I think they’ve appreciated that,” Lovullo said. “And they’ll be ready to go no matter what.”
Lovullo sought to get Carroll “off his feet” for the finale of this four-game series here.
“I know when he’s at the All-Star Game he’s going to be going full throttle,” Lovullo said of Carroll. “There’s no way you’re going to pull back; those athletes are excited. Biggest baseball stage outside of the World Series.”
Diamondbacks fans show up, show out
The cheering heard this week on Diamondbacks broadcasts is courtesy of the many Diamondbacks fans spotted around San Diego enjoying a vacation and going to Petco Park to support the visiting team.
San Diego is a popular vacation spot for Arizonans looking to escape the summer heat.
Lovullo said he and his wife took a walk to the harbor earlier in the week and ended up spending 20 minutes talking to a family of Diamondbacks fans.
“We see a ton of Arizonans here, and we appreciate that,” Lovullo said. “They start to pack in around our dugout pregame and then postgame. We love the support.”

Diamondbacks LHP Eduardo Rodriguez (3-5, 5.78) vs. Padres RHP Randy Vasquez (3-4, 3.79)
At Petco Park: Rodriguez had found some consistency in previous starts until July 4, when the Kansas City Royals tagged him for eight earned runs on 12 hits, including three home runs, in 4⅓ innings. … The strikeouts have been there for him, with 87 in 15 starts. Rodriguez has had trouble keeping his pitch counts down, which is a reason he is averaging just over five innings per start. But he has shut out the Padres in his two career starts against San Diego over 11⅔ innings of work. He will be pitching at Petco Park for just the second time in his career. … Vasquez is set for his 19th start of the season. He has not won a game since May 14 and has eight straight no-decisions. He’s faced the Diamondbacks four times (three starts) with no decisions and a 2.95 earned run average. This season, Vasquez has 49 strikeouts and has issued 42 walks.
