Veteran infielder Michael Chavis, who was in Triple-A Oklahoma City on a minor league deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers, has signed with the Chunichi Dragons of Nippon Professional Baseball, the team announced.
The Dodgers released Chavis from Triple-A to allow him to pursue this opportunity.

Chavis, 29, hasn’t played at the major league level since 2023 with the Washington Nationals. He’s been with the Seattle Mariners, Chicago White Sox and Dodgers organizations over the last few years, but hasn’t received an MLB call up.
This season at Oklahoma City, Chavis was slashing .291/.350/.547 with 13 home runs and 45 runs batted in. His path to earning a major league opportunity with the Dodgers was blocked barring multiple injuries.
So now Chavis is heading overseas where he’ll presumably earn more money and more playing time at the highest level in Japan.
Chavis is a former first-round pick by the Boston Red Sox who debuted in 2019 and has played for three organizations — the Red Sox, Pittsburgh Pirates and Washington Nationals — at the major league level.
Across 357 career games, he’s hitting .238 with 42 home runs, 142 RBIs and an OPS of .685.
