If you turn on the MLB Futures Game on Saturday, you’re bound to see plenty of superstars that are just waiting in the wings. One of those players will be Lookouts third baseman Sal Stewart.
It’s no surprise the Reds third-ranked prospect got the invite. Drafted with the 32nd overall pick in 2022, Stewart was the Reds’ 2023 Organizational Prospect of the Year.
He missed the second half of last season with an injury. Now, Stewart is back–and raking. The 21-year-old is batting over .300, leading Chattanooga in hits, doubles, RBI and OPS.
While Stewart has plenty of mentors he can turn to, he only has to look across the diamond to see someone who knows what the Futures Game experience is all about.
Lookouts first baseman and Reds fourth-ranked prospect Cam Collier played in the game last year, hitting a solo home run off of Caden Dana in the third inning.Â
With Collier being named the game’s most valuable player in 2024, there may be a little pressure for Stewart to bring that same hardware back to Chattanooga.
But regardless of if Stewart wins MVP or not, it likely won’t be too long until the pair is manning the infield together in the big leagues.
