ROYAL OAK — The Traverse City Pit Spitters swept two games from former player Christian Faust and the Royal Oak Leprechauns this weekend.

The Spitters won 5-4 Sunday and 11-9 Saturday night.

Traverse City used seven pitchers in Sunday’s 5-4 victory to go into the all-star break with a 29-19 record and a playoff spot already secured via winning the Great lakes East Division’s first-half title.

Trevor Landen earned the win with 1.2 hitless and scoreless frames, with Eliott Traver picking up a save with a near-perfect ninth.

Aaron Piasecki was 3-for-5 to take a .408 batting average into the all-star break, although Duluth outfielder Ethan Surowiec overtook Piasecki for the NWL batting title lead at .412. Piasecki is one of four Pit Spitters representing Traverse City in the game Wednesday in Madison, Wisconsin.

Brandon Sanchez and Nathanael Coupet each had two hits Sunday.

Adam McKelvey picked up Saturday’s win, with Charlie Wolf earning his second save of the season. Piasecki, Coupet and Alfredo Velazquez each drove in two runs in the 11-9 win. Cole Prout was 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles.

The Spitters start back up Friday, hosting eight consecutive games to start the home stretch.

Saints win 3 of 4 over weekend

The Manistee Saints added Traverse City West grad Nick Brzezinski to their baseball Hall of Fame and then completed a perfect day with a pair of wins over the Carson City Eagles.

Brzezinski was honored before the ball game and then threw a perfect ceremonial first pitch strike to get the game going.

The Saints pounded their way to 23-3 and 17-0 wins over a player-short Carson City team, increasing their GCBL league-leading record to 11-1.

Saints shortstop Xavier Allen had a career day, collecting seven hits in 8 at-bats, with a home run and eight runs batted in.

Blake Johnson picked up his fourth win of the season on the mound in the opener, and Kyle Gorski pitched a 2-hit shutout with nine strikeouts in the second game.

The Saints are on the road next weekend but come home to host the National Amateur Baseball Federation Regional Tournament at Reitz Park July 25-26.

The Saints saw their 10-game winning streak come to an end in the second game of a doubleheader Saturday, losing to the Northern Michigan Patriots 4-2.

The Saints started the day by winning the opener 7-6. In a see-saw game, the Saints scratched across a run in the bottom of the 5th inning, and Roddy MacNeil closed out the game to earn a save for winning pitcher Dylan Bates.

Lucas Richardson, Xavier Allen, and Pierce Johnson each had two hits for the Saints.

The nightcap was a tight game all the way, with the Patriots holding on to edge the Saints and end their streak.

Logan Lewis was charged with the loss despite pitching 6-2/3 strong innings, and Xavier Allen homered for the Saints.
