On Sunday, Alabama’s starting pitcher, Riley Quick, was selected in the first round of the 2025 MLB Draft with the 36th pick by the Minnesota Twins. This made Quick the 66th player from Alabama chosen in the MLB Draft in the last 15 years.

This makes Quick the sixth first-rounder in Alabama history, with Ben Hess being drafted 26th overall to the New York Yankees in the 2024 MLB Draft. Quick is now the third-highest drafted pitcher in program history behind Hess and Taylor Tankersley (27th overall).

The redshirt sophomore had a terrific season on the mound in 2025, with Quick being named the Second Team All-SEC selection as a starting pitcher. Quick went on to record a 3.92 ERA (27 ER/62.0 IP) with 70 strikeouts in 14 starts this past season.

Quick’s three years with the Crimson Tide saw the Twins’ newest pitcher face adversity, with Quick having to undergo Tommy John surgery, which forced him to sit out for the entire 2024 season. Throughout his three seasons in Tuscaloosa, Quick appeared in 31 games, with 15 being starts. Quick finished with a 10-4 record on the mound while maintaining a 3.72 ERA and 101 strikeouts throughout his career with the Crimson Tide.

Quick is the eighth player that the Twins have selected out of Alabama. The Tide’s Ace pitcher was the first Alabama player to be drafted by Minnesota since the Twins took both Connor Prielipp (2nd round) and Garret McMillan (19th round) in the 2022 MLB Draft.

The 2025 MLB First-Year Player Draft began on Sunday, July 13, and will continue through Monday, July 14. The remainder of the two-day event will be featured on MLB.com, where fans can follow along with each pick.
