Former Starkville Academy baseball player Evan Siary now has an important decision to make.
After three seasons as a member of the Mississippi State pitching staff, Siary was picked by the Texas Rangers in the eighth round of the Major League Baseball Draft on Monday.
“It meant the world to him to get drafted,” Evan’s father John Siary said on Monday. “He definitely gave everything for M over S. It’s that point in his life where he has to make that decision.”
Evan Siary had a 4.00 earned run average last season for the Bulldogs with 72 strikeouts in 54 innings. Teams batted .220 against him.
During a May 9 outing against rival Ole Miss, Siary worked eight scoreless innings with 15 strikeouts.
Siary appeared in 10 games during his sophomore season at MSU and struck out 22 batters in 21.2 innings. He appeared in 14 contests as a freshman in 2023 and made three starts for 28 innings with 28 strikeouts.
At Starkville Academy, Siary was chosen to the 2022 MAIS Class 5A, District 1 team and the Class 5A Pitcher of the Year. He was selected the Most Valuable Player of the 5/6A MAIS All-Star Game.
There will be some discussion over the next few days on exactly where Siary goes from here.
According to a published report, the slot value for an eighth round selection is $233,400.
John said the family has valued the time Evan has been able to pitch for the Bulldogs so far.
“Mississippi State has meant the world to him,” John said. “The fanbase here, everybody that has supported him the whole time and what the school means to him, it’s a bittersweet feeling.”
