SALT LAKE CITY – The Boston Red Sox took a final-round flier on BYU right-hander Garrison Sumner in the 2025 MLB draft.

The Red Sox selected the former SLCC Bruin and Utah Ute with the 598th pick of the 20th round. Boston also took BYU pitcher Ben Hansen with its 20th-round selection in 2024.

His only season in Provo saw him go 3-3 with an 8.32 ERA in 14 appearances, 11 starts. He gave up 18 home runs and 57 earned runs, while striking out 60 batters and walking 24.

Sumner remains college-eligible and could opt to return to school.

About Garrison Sumner

Sumner prepped locally at Westlake High School. He was a two-time Perfect Game Preseason All-West Region First Team honoree in 2021 and 2022, and was ranked the No. 4 prospect in Utah’s 2022 class.

The 6’3 junior began his college career with five appearances at Utah in 2023. Sumner totaled 6.2 innings with the Utes, including a career-high 3.1 innings in a loss to Houston in late February.

He transferred to Salt Lake Community College for his sophomore season.

Sumner earned Division I JUCO Honorable Mention All-America status with SLCC after going 9-2 in 13 starts.

He finished 2024 with a sterling 1.82 ERA and 72 strikeouts in 59.1 innings.
