ABILENE — From elite defenders and speed demons on the basepaths to dominant pitchers and prolific power hitters, the Big Country’s 2024-25 Texas high school baseball season was defined by playmakers who delivered when it mattered most.
Several Big Country squads launched deep playoff runs, while many of the area’s top high school softball stars stood out on the diamond and left their mark with spectacular individual seasons.
The Abilene Reporter-News recognizes the area’s top players, coaches and teams from the 2024-25 season with our All-Big Country High School Baseball Superteam.
Superteam selections were determined through a combination of coach nominations, statistics, all-district honors and team success.
Here’s a complete look at the Big Country and greater Abilene area’s top standouts who earned all-area honors and spots on the Abilene Reporter-News 2024-25 All-Big Country Baseball Superteam:
MVP – OF/1B/P Tye Briscoe, Abilene Wylie, Sr.

Offensive Player of the Year – C Ethan Guzman, Clyde, Sr.
Guzman earned All-Big Country Offensive Player of the Year honors after slugging Clyde into the area round of the 3A DI UIL playoffs. He ended a sensational senior season at the plate with a .571 batting average (36-for-63), 40 RBIs, 16 runs scored, 10 doubles, two triples, seven home runs, 36 walks, a 1.847 OPS, six stolen bases and a strong .988 fielding percentage behind the plate.
Defensive Player of the Year – P/SS Maddox Stewart, Gordon, Sr.
When Stewart wasn’t busy making game-changing defensive plays for Gordon at shortstop, he was helping pitch the Longhorns to the Class 1A UIL Baseball State Championship game. On the mound He logged an 8-1 record on the mound with 87 strikeouts, 43 walks, 32 hits allowed, a 2.45 ERA, a 1.28 WHIP and one save in 58 ⅔ innings pitched. Stewart also sported a .361 batting average (30-for-83) with 36 runs scored, 21 RBIs, four doubles, 25 walks, an .890 OPS and 29 stolen bases.
Pitcher of the Year – P George Ferguson, Abilene High, So.
Ferguson provided the Eagles with a reliable bat on their run to the 5A DI UIL baseball playoffs, but he really shined on the mound. Abilene High’s ace finished his sophomore season with a 7-1 record, 96 strikeouts, 24 hits allowed, 18 walks, a 0.72 ERA and a 0.85 WHIP in 49 ⅔ innings pitched against mostly 5A and 6A competition. He also posted a .385 batting average (30-for-78) and a 1.165 OPS with 22 RBIs, 13 runs scored, 10 doubles, four triples and 31 walks.
Newcomer of the Year – P Hunter Edington, Coleman, So.
Eddington gave the Bluecats a shot in the arm as a strong arm on the mound and a reliable presence at the plate in the heart of Coleman’s lineup. The sophomore pitcher tallied a 6-3 record with 65 strikeouts, 40 hits allowed, 27 walks, a 2.01 ERA and a 1.36 WHIP in 49 ⅓ innings pitched. Eddington also ended the year with a .257 batting average (19-for-74) and a .722 OPS while racking up 15 RBIs, eight runs scored, four doubles, one triple and 18 walks too.
Coach of the Year – Ligon West, Gordon
West guided Gordon through uncharted waters during a turbulent 2025 season and led the Longhorns to the Class 1A UIL Baseball State Championship game for the first time in program history. Under West’s leadership, the Longhorns went 23-4 and outscored their opponents by more than six runs per game during their most successful season on the baseball diamond in school history.
