ATLANTA — Shohei Ohtani’s dog Decoy could be back in the spotlight.
Ohtani revealed Monday that his popular Dutch Kooikerhondje has been learning new tricks and could soon reprise his role throwing out the ceremonial first pitch at Dodger Stadium, just as he did last season in one of baseball’s most viral moments.
“Last year we had the bobblehead day so it was a great opportunity for Decoy to be a part of it,” Ohtani told The Sporting Tribune. “Not sure what it is this year yet but he’s learned a few more tricks.”
Decoy, whose Japanese name is Dekopin, became a fan favorite last August when he delivered the first pitch during Ohtani’s Dodgers bobblehead night. Wearing a custom Dodgers jersey, Decoy carried the ball from the mound to Ohtani at home plate, prompting a standing ovation from the sellout crowd and setting off a wave of social media buzz.
The moment was so popular that fans lined up for hours to get Ohtani and Decoy bobbleheads, with thousands of commemorative giveaways selling out before the game.
Now, with Decoy adding more tricks to his repertoire, the Dodgers may be considering bringing him back for another ceremonial first pitch.
While no official date has been set for Decoy’s return to the mound, if it happens, it’s safe to say he will once again steal the show.
