ALBIA — Holy Trinity Catholic and Seymour high schools saw the teams’ pitchers locked in a duel in a Class 1A regional semifinal game Saturday at the Monroe County Sports Complex.
Each pitcher gave up three hits. Each pitcher set down 11 batters on strikeouts.
HTC’s Sydney Jarvis gave up no earned runs but lost.
Seymour’s Kallie Peck allowed one earned run to get the 2-1 win and advance the Warriors to the regional final to face top-ranked Wayne on Monday.
One of Peck’s strikeouts was Jarvis’s first strikeout at the plate this season.
“I think if we played them again, we would win but that wasn’t the case Saturday,” HTC coach Loren Menke said.
HTC had the tying run at third base and the winning run at the plate in the top of the seventh inning, but the Crusders had three strikeouts in the seventh inning.
Jarvis walked one — intentionally — while Peck did not issue any walks.
Each team had a triple but Menke lamented the size of Albia’s park with the home run fence at 210 feet.
“Both of our left-handed hitters hit shots that were probably 200 feet,” Menke said. “Makayla (Simpson) hit one that was bobbled and caught and Kenna (Gittings) hit the fence.”
The game was moved to Albia because of field conditions at Seymour.
“We were happy to have less travel time if we weren’t on the bigger field, I’m pretty sure we would be playing (Monday),” Menke said.
HTC went down in order to start the game.
Seymour’s leadoff batter singled, then Jarvis struck out the next two batters in the order.
“Syd really threw well the last two games,” Menke said. “She had an incredible year.”
Seymour’s Leah Rinchiuso advanced to second on a passed ball and was at third after a wild pitch. Peck singled to score Rinchiuso. Jarvis struck out the next batter.
The Crusaders matched the Seymour run when Kenna Gittings singled on a bunt, stole second and advanced to third on an error. Morgan Krogmeier laid down a sacrifice bunt to score Gittings and even the game at 1.
Alivia Holmes singled for HTC in the third inning. Makayla Simpson hits a shot to left field that was misplayed to allow her to reach base. Holmes was thrown out at third base as Simpson went to second. She stole third, but a ground out ended the inning.
Gittings hit a triple in the fourth inning, but was picked off for the third out.
Seymour’s Robertson led off the bottom of the fourth with a triple. Peck followed with a ground out to third and reached base as Robertson was held at third.
With no outs Seymour had two runners on base. Robertson scored during the next at bat on a passed ball. Jarvis got the next two outs to end the inning with the Crusaders down 2-1.
Each team went down in order in the fifth inning.
Seymour had a batter reach base on an error and made it to second, so Peck was intentionally walked. A ground out and Jarvis’ 11th strikeout ended the inning.
In the top of the seventh, Gittings reached base on a dropped third strike and stole second during the next at bat. She then stole third before a strikeout ended the game.
“I really wanted to win this game for Emily Ross,” Menke said of HTC’s only senior. “It’s a little hard to be excited for the future right now because she meant so much to the team.”
Seymour (21-4) advanced to play top-ranked Wayne (24-2) Monday.
“The ‘what ifs?’ from this game have had me thinking about them the last two days,” Menke said Monday morning.
There is no what if about the season the Crusaders had, the best in program history.
