WASHINGTON (7News) — The Washington Nationals made (recent) history by selecting Eli Willits No. 1 overall in the MLB Draft.

Willits became the youngest No. 1 draft pick this century — and the third-youngest of all-time behind Ken Griffey Jr. (1987) and Tim Foli (1968) — at 17 years, seven months, and four days.

Nats interim General ManagerMike DeBartolo said he viewed Willits as the best fielder and hitter in the draft, which also meant he was the top player on their board.

“It’s one of those nice things where the scouts and the analysts see things exactly the same way,” DeBartolo said Sunday. “It made this very easy for us.”

DeBartolo called Willits a “clean operation” at the plate with a strong ability to make contact and control the strike zone, along with the potential to become a power hitter.

Willits, who attended Fort Cobb-Broxton High in Oklahoma, probably won’t reach the majors as quickly as some college prospects, but the Nationals believe the most in his long-term upside. Willits will likely start at the rookie level and work his way up through the minor leagues.

“I’m excited, thankful to the Nationals organization for giving me this chance. I’m ready to get to work,” Willits told MLB Network after being picked.
