The Colorado Rockies (21-72) will play their final series of the first half against the Cincinnati Reds (48-46). They were just swept by the Boston Red Sox, and outscored 29-7 in three games. In more bad history, the Rockies’ 72 losses prior to the All-Star break are the most since 1933 — the first year of the Midsummer Classic — and surpasses the 2024 White Sox, who were 27-71 at the break. The 72 losses in 93 games are also tied for the second-most in the Modern Era alongside the 1907 St. Louis Cardinals and 1911 Boston Braves, but trails the 1916 Philadelphia Athletics (73). It’s hard to say if things will turn around dramatically in the second half, as they are still on pace for a 126-loss season, but hopefully they can at least end the first half on a high note.
Germán Márquez (3-10, 5.84 ERA) will take the mound for the Rockies. He is making his 193rd career start with the Rockies, the fourth-most in franchise history trailing Jorge De La Rosa (200), Aaron Cook (206) and Kyle Freeland (217). He is the current longest-tenured Rockie, and joins Cook as the only Rockies pitcher to appear in an MLB game in 10 seasons. Unfortunately, Márquez got rocked in his last outing against the Chicago White Sox. He threw six innings and allowed six runs with one walk and two strikeouts in the 10-3 loss on Saturday. Márquez has faced the Reds five times and is 4-1 with a 4.78 ERA. In three starts at Great American Ball Park, he is 2-1 with a 5.68 ERA.
Márquez will face Reds’ rookie right-hander Chase Burns (0-1, 8.10 ERA). Burns was the Reds’ first-round pick in 2024 (second overall) and made his MLB debut on June 24. In his last outing against the Philadelphia Phillies on July 6, he tossed 4 2⁄3 innings while allowing one run on two hits with four walks and seven strikeouts. Burns will be looking for his first major league victory this afternoon.
