BROOKINGS – The Brookings Cubs kept the Sioux Falls Brewers off the scoreboard until the ninth inning on Wednesday night and that led to a 5-2 win at Bob Shelden Field.

Brookings broke a 0-0 tie in the bottom of the third. Rhett Zelinsky hit a two-out single and then stole second. He then came home on a Lincoln Vasgaard double. Vasgaard then scored on an Arlen Peters double to make it 2-0.

The Cubs would double their lead in the bottom of the fifth. Isaac Bonner walked to lead off the half inning. He then scored on a Zelinsky triple and Zelinsky scored on a sacrifice fly from Vasgaard to make it 4-0.

Brookings scored one more run in the bottom of the sixth. Nolan Miles and Parker Winghart each walked to start the half inning. Henry Hammrich then grounded into a double play but Miles scored on a Bonner single to push the lead to 5-0 heading into the final three innings.

Sam Baier hit a lead-off double from the Brewers in the bottom of the ninth. Two batters later AJ Langner came to the plate and hit one over the right field fence to make it 5-2. The next two batters grounded out and struck out to end the game.

The Cubs had six hits in the victory. Vasgaard was 1-for-3 with two RBIs and Zelinsky was 2-for-3 with an RBI. Peters and Bonner were each 1-for-3 with an RBI and Cofell was 1-for-4. 

Jake Ammann pitched the first five innings for the Cubs. He gave up no runs and two hits and had 10 strikeouts and one walk. Tucker Wookey pitched the final four innings and gave up two earned on three hits with six strikeouts and one walk.

The Cubs are now 11-4 and host the Luverne Redbirds on Saturday at 7 p.m.
