OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) – On this day in history, Omaha native Bob Gibson recorded his 3,000th career strikeout while playing for the St. Louis Cardinals.
It happened back in 1974 in a match-up against the Cincinnati Reds.
Even though the Cardinals lost that game, Gibson became the second pitcher to rack up 3,000 strikeouts. The first was Walter Johnson in 1923.
In Gibson’s 17-year major-league career, he tallied 3,117 strikeouts — all with the Cardinals. He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1981.
