The Twins activated Zebby Matthews from the Injured List, and he started for the team on Saturday night in Colorado. To make room on the 26-man roster, Travis Adams was optioned to St. Paul.Â
Diego Cartaya was also activated from the Saints Development List.Â
Cedar Rapids placed Misael Urbina on the Injured List with a left hand contusion.Â
Rayne Doncon’s rehab assignment was transferred from the FCL to the Mighty Mussels. Â
In Friday night’s Minor League Report, Tom noted that Kaelen Culpepper left the Wichita game early. He was back at the top of the Wind Surge lineup on Saturday.Â
Many of the Twins 2025 draft picks (and players they will be signing as non-drafted free agents) will be traveling to Fort Myers on Sunday. Presumably, the players will arrive and settle in. At some point, probably early, on Monday, they will take their physicals. I would expect we’ll start hearing signing bonuses moments after the players put pen to paper. If you missed it, I chatted with ninth-round pick Justin Mitrovich, a right-handed pitcher from Elon University, on Friday about getting drafted, his amateur days, what he throws and what he’s looking forward to in pro baseball.Â
SAINTS SENTINEL
St. Paul 4, Louisville 15
Box Score
Marco Raya has been incredibly good for the Saints for the last month or so. Saturday night was not representative of that. Raya gave up seven runs (5 earned) on six hits (including two homers) and four walks. He had three strikeouts. It was a surprising turn after a 1-2-3 first inning that included two strikeouts. He wasn’t helped by his defense, including a throwing error of his own on a pickoff play.Â
Jarret Whorff came on for the fifth inning. He got two outs, but gave up six runs on five hits (including two more home runs) and a walk. Pierson Ohl got the final out of the fifth inning. He gave up two runs over his 2 1/3 innings. Michael Tonkin struck out two batters in a scoreless eighth inning.Â
In the top of the third inning, right after the Bats took their 3-0 lead, the Saints came back with three runs over their own. With one out, Anthony Prato singled and Luke Keaschall walked. Payton Eeles followed with a double that scored both runs. Austin Martin walked. Eeles scored on an Edouard Julien single.Â
The Saints added a run in the top of the ninth to cut the deficit to 11 runs, but that was as close as they got. With one out in that inning, Prato, Keaschall and Eeles walked. After a pitching change, Martin walked to drive in Prato with the final run.Â
Prato had two of the four Saints hits. Eeles fourth double was the lone extra base hit. The Saints also worked 10 walks. Keaschall and Martin each walked three times.Â
WIND SURGE WISDOM
Wichita 5, Springfield 4
Box Score
The Wind Surge jumped out to an early lead. They led 5-1 through the middle innings and then held on at the end for the Win.Â
Kaelen Culpepper led off the game with a fly ball to deep right-center field. The fielder impressively got to the ball, and really should have caught it, but it dropped and Culpepper reached second. Walker Jenkins followed with a line-drive single to right to put runners on first and third. Gabriel Gonzalez lined a ball up the middle to tipped off of the pitcher’s glove and went to the second baseman for an easy double play. However, Culpepper scored the game’s first run.Â
The Surge powered their way to two runs in the second inning. Kyler Fedko led off by hitting his 18th home run. Two batters later, Rubel Cespedes lined his seventh homer over the right-field wall to make it 3-0.Â
Still leading 3-1 after four innings, Walker Jenkins hit a two-out triple. He scored on a line-drive single to right by Gonzalez. Then in the top of the sixth, Cespedes started things with a two-out walk. Nate Baez doubled him to third. Jorel Ortega walked to load the bases. Culpepper followed with a walk to drive in the team’s fifth run.Â
That was it for the Wind Surge offense, at least in terms of scoring runs. Let’s jump to the pitching. Minnesotan John Klein made the start and gave up just one run through the first four innings. He gave up four hits, walked one and recorded an impressive six strikeouts. He was consistently hitting 95 mph with the fastball.
Jacob Wosinski came on and pitched a scoreless fifth inning. Then Aaron Rozek came in and tossed the next three innings. He was charged with three runs on four hits and a walk. He struck out three batters. With the lead down to just one run, John Stankiewicz earned his fourth save of the season with a scoreless ninth inning.Â
Walker Jenkins went 3-for-5 with his first triple. Rubel Cespedes went 2-for-2 with two walks, his 16th double and his seventh home run.Â
KERNELS NUGGETS
Cedar Rapids 0, Wisconsin 10
Box Score
I think it’s fair to say that this was not the Kernels’ finest performance of the year.Â
The pitching wasn’t terribly good. Alejandro Hidalgo started and in three innings (plus two batters in the fourth), he gave up seven runs (5 earned) on eight hits and a walk. Samuel Perez allowed the inherited runner to score but gave up none of his own runs over two innings. Logan Whitaker gave up one run on two hits over two innings. He had two strikeouts. Wilker Reyes gave up two runs on three hits and a walk over the final two innings. He struck out three batters.Â
Kyle DeBarge and Brandon Winokur each had a single, the lone Kernels hits. Andy Lugo and Luke Napleton each walked. Winokur stole his 21st base.Â
MUSSEL MATTERS
Fort Myers 5, Daytona 4 (10 innings)
Box Score
Fort Myers fell down 4-1, worked their way back, tied it up and won it in extra innings. It was a great way to celebrate Walker Jenkins bobblehead day! Â
Dasan Hill, the lanky lefty drafted one year ago, has really struggled to throw strikes of late. That was on full display on Saturday night. Hill went the first three innings, and despite giving up three hits and SIX walks, he gave up just two runs. Of his 66 pitches, just 30 were strikes. Concerning? Sure. Yet, somehow, he has been able to limit damage most of the time.Â
Jason Doktorcyzk came on and gave up two runs over four innings, both came in the fourth inning. Matt Gabbert pitched scoreless innings in the eighth and ninth.Â
The Mussels actually took the first lead with a run in the first inning. After a walk and a single, Caleb McNeely grounded into a double play, but it scored Byron Chourio with the first run.Â
Down 4-1 in the fifth, Angel Del Rosario hit a ground-rule double and scored on a single by Jefferson Valladeres.Â
Down 4-2 in the bottom of the eighth inning, Bryan Acuna started things with a one-out walk. Peyton Carr singled to right to put runners on first and third. Blaze O’Saben drove in Acuna with a single to make it 4-3. Angel Del Rosario beat out a potential double play which allowed Carr to score the tying run.Â
Lefty Brennen Oxford worked a scoreless top of the 10th inning. It is more impressive when a wild pitch pushed the Manfred Man to third base before there was one out. Oxford struck out the next two batters before getting the third out on a ground ball.Â
The bottom of the 10th inning began with Acuna on second base. Carr walked, but the next two batters got out without advancing the runners. Fortunately, with two outs, Yohander Martinez came through with a single that drove in Acuna with the winning run.Â
Along with the game-winner, Martinez added his sixth double of the season. Acuna hit his first Mussels double to go with his walk. Valladeres went 2-for-4. Byron Chourio went 1-for-3 with two walks. Â
COMPLEX CHRONICLES
FCL Twins 2, FCL Red Sox 3
Box Score
In the bottom of the first inning, the Twins put two on the board. With one out, Jay Thomason walked. He stole second and third, and after Daiber De Los Santos walked, Thomason scored on a wild pitch. Jayson Bass walked. With two outs, an Irvin Nunez single drove in De Los Santos with the second run.Â
That was about it for the Twins offense. Over the next eight innings, they managed just two hits (Carlos Silva and Jayson Bass). Silva was hit by a pitch, and Luis Fragoza was plunked twice. The rehabbing-Thomason walked two more times, and De Los Santos walked once more. Thomason stole three bases. Over his past two rehab games, he has four walks and five steals.Â
Hendry Chivilli made the start for the Twins. He walked one in the first but no runs allows. He walked two in the second inning, but again worked out of it without a run scoring. The third inning began with a double and a walk at which point Xander Hamilton came into the game. After a walk, he struck out the next two batters. Unfortunately, a slow roller toward short was an infield single and the run charged to Chivilli.Â
Hamilton struck out two more in a perfect fourth inning. Leonardo Rondon came in for the fifth frame. He gave up two runs on two hits, both runs scoring on a home run. Anthony Narvaez recorded four outs without giving up a run.Â
DOMINICAN DAILIES
The Dominican Summer League All Star game will be played starting at 9:00 am central time. In the AL vs NL game, there are 37 players on each roster. Almost inexplicably, the lone Twins representative is infielder Haritzon Castillo. The 17-year-old from Venezuela is hitting .310/.441/.483 (.924) with six doubles, three triples, a homer and 26 RBI in 26 games. He signed with the Twins in February for about $950,000.Â
There are certainly others who are worthy of a spot on the All Star squad. Maybe Carlos Taveras would have been on the roster. Unfortunately, he was placed on the 60-Day IL recently. Taveras signed for $1.2 million this spring.Â
Of the hitters who have played in more than half of the team’s 34 games this season, seven of them have an OPS over .800. On the mound, Santiago Castellanos and his upper-90s fastball at age 16 would represent the Twins well. Â
