NORFOLK – For the third time this season, the Norfolk Elkhorn Valley Bank Juniors faced off with OneNebraska FCU (Columbus), but this time it was in an elimination game in the Class A Area Six District Tournament in Norfolk.
After losing the previous two meetings by a combined 20-2, Norfolk was able to reverse the tide, picking up a 6-2 win and living to see one more day in district action.
Norfolk got on the board first after Maddox Magnussen singled to center, Carter Walnofer grounded out, and Adian Phillips hit a sac fly, each scoring a run.
Norfolk would add another run in the top of the second when Magnussen doubled down the left field line on a full count, increasing Norfolk’s lead to 4-1.
Magnussen, who finished the day 2-for-4 at the plate, was also strong on the mound, scattering two runs (one earned) and four hits while walking four and striking out five in a complete game effort.
Gavin Young took the loss for OneNebraska FCU, allowing six runs (five earned) on four hits with five walks and two strikeouts in a seven inning effort.
Landon Veirgutz was aggressive running the bases, stealing three of them in the contest, while the defense was able to turn a double play in the bottom of the sixth.
Young, Tanner Meyers, Carson Wesch and Jayce Nelson each collected a hit for ONeNebraska, who say their seaosn come to an end with a 17-14 record.
Norfolk will take the diamond this evening for a 5 p.m. contest with RVR Bank (Fremont) and a spot in tomorrow’s district title game. RVR Bank defeated Norfolk 2-1 back on Saturday.
