ARLINGTON — Even the Texas Rangers like to remember some guys.

The Rangers signed right-handed relief pitcher Carl Edwards Jr. — a former draft choice and prospect of the club — to a minor league deal Tuesday afternoon. Edwards, 33, has pitched just three major league innings since the start of last season and played for the Los Angeles Angels earlier this season.

He will report to Triple-A Round Rock.

The Rangers drafted Edwards in the 48th round of the 2011 MLB draft out of Prosperity High (S.C.). He was the club’s No. 13 prospect prior to the 2013 season, according to Baseball America, and was traded as part of a packaged to the Chicago Cubs that summer for right-handed pitcher Matt Garza.

Edwards pitched parts of four years with the Cubs and won a World Series with them during the 2016 season. He played for seven different teams from 2019-25 and has a career 3.59 ERA and 7 saves in 283 innings.

He pitched in two games for the Angels in April before he was designated for assignment and elected free agency. Edwards signed with the Tigres de Quintana Roo of the Mexican League before he was released Monday.

Edwards last played a full big league season in 2023 when, with the Washington Nationals, he posted a 3.69 ERA in 31 2/3 innings.
