BROOKINGS – The Brookings Cubs suffered a 9-5 loss to the Harrisburg Woodies in their regular season game at Bob Shelden Field on Tuesday night.

Harrisburg opened the game with two runs in the top of the first. Nate Motl hit a one-out double and Jack Sutton followed with a double to hit him home and make it 1-0. Sutton advanced to third on a wild pitch and then scored on a different wild pitch to push the lead to 2-0.

The Woodies extended the lead in the top of the second. Dalton Allen reached on an error by Isaac Bonner and then back-to-back walks from Palmer Boyd and Carson Drexler loaded the bases. Allen then came home on a wild pitch to make it 3-0 heading into the third. 

Sutton and Tyler Mitzel walked to begin the third. Sutton would then come home on another wild pitch to make it 4-0. Drexler hit a one-out double in the top of the fourth. Motl then drew a two-out walk and Sutton followed with a double to score Motl and Drexler and make it 6-0.

Brookings got on the board in the bottom of the sixth. Myles Rees hit a two-out double and moved to third on a wild pitch. Lincoln Vasgaard then hit Rees home with a single to make it 6-1 through six innings.

Bonner and Rhett Zelinsky hit back-to-back one-out singles in the bottom of the seventh. Bonner then scored on a wild pitch to make it 6-2 but Zelinsky was thrown out at home plate after tagging up on a fly out to left field from Colin Gibson.

Harrisburg increased the lead back to five in the top of the eighth. Drexler hit a lead-off double and advanced to third on a ground out from Maddux Scherer. He then scored on a Motl sacrifice fly to make it 7-2.

Henry Hammrich hit a lead-off double in the bottom of the inning and Parker Winghart followed with a walk. Hammrich scored on a Rees single and Vasgaard hit Winghart home with a double to make it 7-4 with no outs. Justin Cofell then struck out and Rees scored on a ground out from Nolan Miles. Bonner then popped out to the third baseman and it was 7-5 heading into the final inning.

Harrisburg scored two insurance runs in the top of the ninth. Mitzel and Ryan Menssen were each hit by a pitch to start the inning. Mitzel scored on a single from Isaac Loosmore and Ramstad, who ran for Menssen, scored on a double play to make it 9-5.

Zelinsky was hit by a pitch to begin the bottom of the inning. Gibson then struck out looking and Hammrich popped up to the first baseman for the first two outs of the inning. Winghart drew a walk but Rees then struck out looking as well to end the game.

Brookings had 15 hits in the loss. Vasgaard was 2-for-4 with two RBIS and Rees was 2-for-4 with an RBI. Zelinsky was 3-for-4 and Hammrich was 3-for-5. Winghart was 2-for-3 and Bonner was 2-for-5. Miles was 1-for-4 with an RBI.

Arlen Peters got the start on the mound for the Cubs and pitched three innings. He gave up four runs, two earned, on two hits with one strikeout and five walks. Tucker Wookey pitched the next five innings and gave up three earned runs on five hits with three strikeouts and four walks. Winghart pitched the ninth inning and gave up two earned runs and one hit with one strikeout and no walks.

Brookings is now 11-5 and will play Harrisburg again on Thursday, this time on the road, in the final regular season game. First pitch is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
