Nick Lodolo shuts out Washington Nationals, Reds avoid sweep

Cincinnati Reds LHP Nick Lodolo (8-6, 3.08 ERA) pitched a 4-hitter to beat the Nationals and avert a sweep for the Reds July 23.

The Seattle Mariners and New York Yankees are the most aggressive teams pursuing Arizona Diamondbacks third baseman Eugenio Suarez, with a handful of others still in pursuit, according to USA TODAY’s Bob Nightengale.

In April, Suarez became the 19th player in MLB history to hit four home runs in one game, in an 8-7 loss in 10 innings to the Atlanta Braves. His fourth homer in that game came against Braves relief pitcher Raisel Iglesias, Suarez’s teammate with the Cincinnati Reds from 2015 to 2020.

Suarez hit 189 home runs over seven seasons with the Reds from 2015 to 2021.

Suarez homered twice in three games against the Reds at Great American Ball Park in June.

Trade rumors: Would the Reds consider acquiring Eugenio Suarez?

Former Reds general manager Jim Bowden suggested the Reds might be in the mix for Suarez, but Cincinnati could be a longshot if Arizona requires a top prospect or two.

“Based on the offers Arizona should get from the rest of the field, it might take one of Cincinnati’s top prospects, third baseman/second baseman Sal Stewart or corner infielder Cam Collier, to get a deal done,” Bowden wrote for nytimes.com. “I doubt the Reds would do that for a two-month rental, especially since acquiring bullpen and outfield help is their top priority at the deadline.”
