The St. Louis Cardinals are vying for a postseason spot, but are 3.5 games out, and had a chance to get a nice series win against the Colorado Rockies to stay as buyers as the deadline approached. But, they were shut out 6-0.

After the game, Cardinals manager Oli Marmol gave a brutally honest summary of the game, which was shared by Katie Woo of The Athletic. Marmol said that game was the “Worst game we’ve played all year.”

St. Louis was shut out by the Rockies, 6-0, the first shutout from the Rockies in 220 games, a record in the modern era. It’s a disastrous loss for the team, as it sends the Cardinals towards the deadline as clear sellers.

Coming out of the All-Star break, the Cardinals were swept by the Arizona Diamondbacks and then dropped two of three to the Rockies, who are now 26-76 after winning the series against the Cardinals.

This loss not only drops the Cardinals down in the standings, but it also has the Cardinals looking to be clear sellers at the deadline.

Ryan Helsley, Phil Maton, Steven Matz, and potentially even Nolan Arenado and Sonny Gray could be on their way out the door this trade deadline. Gray is planning to veto any trade with his no-trade clause. Arenado could do the same.

But, regardless of who the Cardinals end up moving, the brutal shutout against the Rockies might’ve been the final straw for the Cardinals, who were toeing the line between being sellers and buyers at the trade deadline.

Marmol’s comments are a very candid and brutally honest summary of the game. While the on-field play might’ve been bad, the off-field ramifications from this loss are massive as well. It might not be a stretch to call this the worst loss of the season, and fittingly, Marmol called the performance from the Cardinals the “worst we’ve played all year.”
