Shohei Ohtani and the Los Angeles Dodgers head to Fenway tonight for a three-game series against the Boston Red Sox.

Baseball fans in Boston are in for a treat as they’re set for a rare chance to see one of the game’s greatest players step onto the field at Fenway.

Ohtani won’t be pitching in this series, but his explosive bat gives plenty of reason to watch the MVP candidate.

Ohtani’s Power Surge

The two-way player has hit a home run in five consecutive games. So fans at Fenway can expect a dinger or two — or three — during this weekend series from the Japanese giant.

Ohtani is hitting .273 with 37 home runs and 70 RBIs this season. His batting average has dropped over the course of July as he’s resumed pitching. He’s hitting just .206 in July. But he’s shown no decline in power.

As for the Dodgers, they remain comfortably atop the NL West, with a 60–43 record, five games ahead of the second-place San Diego Padres. They are just 4-6 in their last 10 games, but the rest of the NL West has also had a rough second half of July, with records of .500 or lower in their last 10 games.

Boston is Back

On the other side, Boston is 55–49 and riding the wave since trading long-time slugger Rafael Devers to San Francisco on June 15 for a haul including Kyle Harrison and Jordan Hicks, plus top prospects — an overhaul that’s reshaped the clubhouse and on-field dynamic.

The Red Sox started July with a 12-game winning streak. They’ve since lost four of their last five. But they remain contenders for a wildcard spot.

Top prospect Roman Anthony has impressed since being called up, and the 24-year-old Ceddanne Rafaela has not only improved his offense in his second full year with Boston — batting .271 with 14 home runs in 48 RBIs in 98 games — but he’s also emerged as one of the top defensive outfielders in the game.
