Nathan Phillips pitched a complete game to record the win for the Silversmiths by scattering seven hits, as he yielded two runs and one walk while striking out seven.
Sherrill sent 11 men to the plate in the first inning in generating the six-run outburst.
After Dante Ruby singled in two runs, Joe Yovino followed with an RBI single to build a 3-0 advantage.
With the bases loaded, Charlie Martyn was hit by a pitch to drive in a run and Hector Gonzalez drew a bases-loaded walk. Hank Shield then reached on a fielder’s choice to boost the lead to 6-0.
Jordan Hughes drove in a run on a groundout in the fourth inning to extend the lead to 7-0.
Xavier Myles doubled to lead off the ninth and Ben Hess homered to right-center field as Watertown averted the shutout.
William Webster singled twice and Hess also singled for the Rapids.
Yovino doubled, singled and drove in a run to pace Sherrill at the plate.
Watertown starter Ozzie Weber was dealt the loss as he allowed all six runs on three hits and three walks while hitting two batters.
Joey Hagen then relieved Weber and yielded one run on two hits and struck out five in 4 1/3 innings of work. Cody Graf then pitched three scoreless innings, striking out six and walking three.
Watertown, which went 14-25-1 in the regular season, defeated Syracuse, 6-3, on Tuesday to secure a playoff berth as well as the No. 3 seed in the division playoffs.
This marked the second straight season that the Rapids made the postseason as last year it competed in the Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League playoffs, defeating Utica in a first-round game before losing in a division semifinal to Amsterdam.
Second-seeded Sherrill advanced to host top-seeded Syracuse today in the first game of the division championship series.
The second and third game, if necessary, will be played at Syracuse on Sunday.
